Indoor gardening : key to live with fresh and healthy environment
INDOOR Gardening: one of the most cruicial things for present polluted cites
Indoor gardening refers to the process of growing plant indoor.Nowadays this is gaining major priority in urban areas for its air purification and decorative purpose. With the increase in pollution, unmanaged urbaniztion its demand and necessity has increased in this present context.
Indoor gardening has become most crucial in most of the cites of our country like kathmandu as Kathmandu has been ranked the third most polluted city in the world, according to Pollution Index 2016. These indoor plants removes polluntant from air like trichloroethane, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, benzene, ammonia etc and other suspended particles. These pollutant are toxic to human as well as animals as these gasses in air causes irritation to nose, nausea, headache, dizziness, liver kidney damage(xylene), cardiovascular problems (So2) etc in human beings
In 1980s a American scientist Dr.Bill wolverton first conducted an experiment, he took a plant and kept in gas chamber to see the plant which can remove or decrease pollutant. In 1989 NASA(National Aeronautics and Space Administration) on the basis of this report made a list on indoor plant which can efficiently purify air. Among them some of the plants are listed below with their botanical names
Peace lily (Spathiphyllum)
English ivy (Hedera helix)
Snake plant (Sansevieria laurentii)
Red edged Dracaena or dragaon tree (Dracaena marginata)
Bamboo Palm( Chamaedorea seifrizii)
Money plant (Epipreminum aureum)
Aloe vera
Areca plant
Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) etc
Above mentioned plants are suitable for indoor gardening as these plants requie
less frequent water
require shade and can also grow in artificial light
grow in room temperature
shallow rooted and grow easily in small pot indoor.
Most of the indoor plants die due to over water, under water and direct or over sunlight so proper care and mangement of these plants are required and these can be done in following ways
Potting soil should be kept moist but not wet. Best way to check moisture is to dip our finger 1 inch in soil and water only if it is dry .
underwatering and over watering should be avoided .Underwatering can be known by Premature drooping of leaves, flowers, Transculent leaves, brown yellow or curled leaf edges. Similarly overwatering is indicated by Fungus or mold growth on soil surface , standing water in the bottom of the container, leaves with brown rotten patches.
Pot should be kept indoor and not in direct sunlight so rate of evaporation very less hence water requirement is less.
Drainage hole should be checked regularly
Prunning of the areial parts of the plant can be done if it is growing very tall.
Ornamental plants like Palm or succulents require very little feed once in 2-3 months so we can add few slow releasing NPK fertilizer cystals or handful of compost, but if the growing plants are flowering plants like Orchids they need little high dose of fertilizer regularly.
Pest control can be done by regular mild spray of plain soap solution or Spraying mixture of 5 ml neem oil with some 10 drop of liquid soap per litr can be applied once in 15 days or weekly if infested.
